Here are 10 tips for getting listed higher on search engines

1) Start with a content rich Web site.  In order to get in the top on search engines, your Web site should have great content.  Having lots of content rich pages not only helps to get you higher ranking but also is beneficial to visitors who come from the search engines to your site.  The Web was originally built on FREE content and people still appreciate sites that offer such content. In addition, the more pages your site has, with good internal links, the better your pages will rank

2) Link building:  The most important way these days to get top search engine ranking is to develop lots of links from other high quality sites to yours. One way to build your link popularity is to request links from other site owners. The best way to do this is to put a link to their site on your site first, then mention this to them in a personal email.  How do you find sites to link to? Go to people who are in related fields but are not direct competitors to ask for links.  We do not recommend that you use link farms or other marginal methods that may be discounted or even penalized by the major search engines.

3) Another way of building links to your site to get top search engine ranking is to post useful answers to questions and message threads on discussion lists and message boards.  Often the board owners will allow you to put a link to your Web site there as well as a small bit of information about what you do.

4) The search engines are more likely to give top ranking to sites that are listed in directories. The biggest and most expensive one is Yahoo (costs $299) but there are others such as the Open Directory that are free (www.dmoz.org). The only problem with the free ones is that it can take awhile for your site to get listed.  See our list of Internet directories on the search engines page.

5) More on link building -:Write articles about subjects you’re familiar with and post them as many places as you can think of.  Most ezine publishers are always looking for content and they generally post the past issues of the ezines on their Web sites. You may also send your article to Web sites that offer free content to Webmasters.

6) The most powerful way to build links quickly is to develop an associate program with a product that offers resellers a good comission. It also helps if the product is a good one that is in demand.

7) Choose your best key words.  Finding the best key words is not always easy.  Brainstorm words from general to specific.  There is a great program that we recommend called Wordtracker for helping you to do this. If you order through us, we will give you an exciting ebook FREE. In addition you can use the term suggestion tool on Overture to research some words. The more specific your key word phrases are the better.  We do not recommend using individual key words but rather phrases that allow better targeting of your audience. It’s best to try to get top search engine ranking with the less competitive words at first and then move up to the more difficult ones as you get experience.

8) Put the key word phrase you have chosen in your title and page description. You should also put it in the text on the page you’ve created in various places.

9) Submit your newly optimized site to the search engines.  Be sure that a spider can reach all the pages of your site. It’s helpful to have a site map specifically for the search engines to navigate. The top level pages on your site are more likely to be noticed by the spiders than the deeper level pages so put your optimized pages in the top level.

10)  Use simple HTML, not all the fancy moving Java and other zappy things.  Search engines look for text and links on your site, not graphics or anything else. If you put good content on your site, you’re much more likely to get links that will increase traffic to your site from search engines.
